A Resource for Shared Understanding
(8-page PDF to share with your therapist, coach, partner, or provider to help contextualize your complexity)

What is “Giftedness” in adults—and how does it overlap with Autism, ADHD, Complex PTSD, and Burnout?

As a licensed therapist specializing in the intersections of neurodivergence—specifically Autism, ADHD, and Giftedness—and the often co-occurring experiences of Complex PTSD (CPTSD) and Burnout, I’ve spent years supporting adults navigating these layered identities.

From my work behind closed doors, I've observed that around 90% of adults I assess for Autism, ADHD, or Giftedness have experienced at least one (and often several) episodes of neurodivergent burnout—often the result of masking their differences in professional, personal, or social environments. Additionally, roughly 70% show signs of Complex PTSD. That’s a significant amount of overlap.

In response, I’ve created a (yes, quite comprehensive!) table that expands on published characteristics of Giftedness in adults and explores how each trait may overlap with:

  • Autism

  • ADHD

  • Complex PTSD (CPTSD)

  • Burnout

For each characteristic of Giftedness, I’ve included:

  1. Where overlap exists across the above areas

  2. My clinical reasoning for how and why each trait might show up in individuals with these neurocomplex profiles

This table reflects the synthesis I do during assessments—whenever someone identifies with these traits, I’m thinking through the full range of possibilities behind what they’re describing. This is the nuance behind identification, diagnosis, and meaningful recommendations.

I hope this resource supports deeper conversations and shared understanding with the people in your care team and life.

Enjoy!
